War of the Burning Sands
If the Gray is an echo of Athas seen through a mirror darkly, then Kalidnay is the reflection of a worldly city seen through that same mirror. But this mirror has been smashed into pieces, then rearranged according to the whims of a lunatic. The city scoffs at natural laws. Down every alley, a new and terrible secret waits to destroy the unsuspecting.
Although the City of Shadow is the only known stronghold of civilization in the Gray, it is neither a safe settlement nor a pleasant one. Its citizens, both living and ghastly, stay in the city for simple reasons, but rarely good ones. The city has always been and always will be home. It is all they know. Such people raise families even in this dark place. The nature of the Gray has warped the individuals who live and have been born here in the realm of shadow.
Scattered groups of forsaken citizens occupy various homes, most in the city’s central district, where the palace, arena, and ziggurat stand. Other buildings have crumbled from disuse, neglect, and the decay of the Gray. The streets are more dilapidated and more dangerous the farther one strays from inhabited areas.
